Supporting Stripe Payments

Last updated: April 10, 2026

Overview

Monk supports a variety of ways to manage invoices in conjunction with Stripe. Understanding which model you use can help clarify how payments are tracked and reconciled.

Invoice to Cash (Stripe-Managed Invoices)

Stripe is the source of truth for invoices. Stripe creates and manages invoices, and Monk syncs invoice status from Stripe. When Stripe marks an invoice as paid, Monk updates its records to match.

How it works:

  1. Stripe creates and sends the invoice (or Monk pushes an invoice to Stripe).

  2. The customer pays through Stripe's hosted invoice page.

  3. Stripe marks the invoice as paid and notifies Monk via webhook.

  4. Monk syncs the updated status from Stripe.

Contract to Cash (Monk-Managed Invoices)

Monk is the source of truth for invoices. Monk creates, sends, and tracks invoices. Customers pay through Monk's payment portal, which supports multiple payment methods:

Method

Description

Stripe

Credit card, debit card, or bank transfer via Stripe

ACH

Direct bank transfer (3–5 business days)

Wire Transfer

International wire transfer (1–2 business days)

Check

Mail a physical check

When a customer pays via Stripe (card or ACH) through the portal, Monk listens for Stripe payment webhooks and automatically marks the invoice as paid.

Edge case — Bank Wires to Stripe's Cash Balance outside of Monk's payment portal

In rare cases, customers pay by sending a bank wire directly to Stripe's bank account, rather than paying through Monk's payment portal. These payments land in Stripe's customer cash balance — a holding area within Stripe — and are not automatically reconciled by Monk.

If a customer is paying this way:

  1. You will need to manually reconcile the cash balance in the Stripe Dashboard. See Stripe's guide: Manual Cash Balance Reconciliation.

  2. After reconciling in Stripe, you may also need to manually mark the invoice as paid in Monk.

We recommend directing contract-to-cash customers to pay through Monk's payment portal (the "Pay Invoice" link in invoice emails), where all payments are automatically tracked and reconciled.
